The advancement in automotive technology has generated variations in cars. It wouldn’t be correct to say that internal combustion engine cars are replaced by electric cars, but it soon would in coming years which might disturb the fuel
economy. Talking about electric cars one must know what they are or how do they function. Unlike gasoline cars, electric cars do not consume fuel as they use an electric motor powered by electricity from rechargeable batteries or a fuel cell. Such cars that run on electricity emit fewer greenhouse gases and air pollutants than cars using fuel/petrol, thus making the environment healthy and friendly for us. Until now you’re familiar with how an electric car works. The car, therefore, needs to be plugged into a wall outlet or some other sort of charging equipment to power the electric motor and it can be done through various means, installing electric
charging stations at regular intervals being one of them. Since the car runs on electricity it has nothing to do with liquid fuel components, the engine has its own components which are;


A battery is one of the most important sources or
components of an electric vehicle as it supplies power to
vehicle’s motor and other accessories.

Charge unit/port

A charging port is of equal importance
just like a battery. It helps a vehicle to connect to an external
power supply in order to charge its battery.


Power Supply Converter

which help in converting the higher voltage power from
traction battery pack to lower voltage power which the vehicle
needs for running as well as the battery needs for recharging.

EV Traction Motor

The traction motor of an electric vehicle converts electrical energy to mechanical energy which helps in propelling the vehicle as the energy is transferred to the vehicle’s wheels.

Onboard Charger

When the charge port supplies power to the traction battery, it initially supplies it with AC electricity which is later converted to DC electricity supply by Onboard charger. It takes care of the battery’s voltage, temperature, current, and state of charge.

Thermal system 

Electric cars are designed with such efficacy that they have in them the thermal system which ensures the proper temperature range of the engine as well as its electric motor following some of its other components.

Transmission of power 

The electric power turns into mechanical power through an electric traction motor which is then used up by the wheels of the car into drive.


Along with the benefits of electric cars one must not neglect the fact that they are less reliable in Pakistan as compared to other countries. Unlike Pakistan, China and India have adopted Electric Vehicle plan in order to improve air quality which is a major cause of global warming. Similarly, if we adopt Electric Vehicle plan we would be investing in something good for our future. Electric cars can be reliable in certain conditions and if those conditions or needs are not met by the government, electric cars would not last long in Pakistan. As a matter of fact electric cars do not have engine or moving parts which means there would be no wear out of parts, therefore leading to lower maintenance. One of the major reasons why electric cars are
not reliable for driving in Pakistan is that they need to be charged before making a journey and the car can take up to 8 to 12 hours to fully charge if it has been plugged into 120-volt outlet and for example, your are own your way and you run out
of charging, it would take 8-12 hours for your car to get charged. It demonstrates that you can not plan long journeys on electric cars especially in Pakistan where there are no charging points installed. As a result, electric cars are not reliable in Pakistan for now as they need adequate infrastructure which is highly lacked by our country. However, the government of Pakistan is planning to adopt EV plan in the coming years.
